Indicating Altitude - The Altimeter. An altimeter is a requirement for both VFR and IFR flying. Absolute altitude is the actual height of the aircraft above the earth's surface. Some airplanes are equipped with radar altimeters that measure this height above ground level directly. 2020. 3. 12. · A cockpit pressurization and oxygen warning system includes a cabin pressure input and an aircraft pressure input. A pilot interface includes a first visual indicator having a first recognizable characteristic disposed in a first position that is made visually perceptible when a first signal is asserted and a second visual indicator having a second recognizable. The attitude indicator (AI), formerly known as the gyro horizon or artificial horizon, is a flight instrument that informs the pilot of the aircraft orientation relative to Earth's horizon, and gives an immediate indication of the smallest orientation change. They were followed by the altimeter, speed indicators, and, soon after, aircraft systems meant to help the pilots during the long journey were introduced (Department of Aerospace Engineering, 2004, p. 3). Many airline passengers often wonder how the aircraft flies and what it uses to determine the altitude and direction. Calibrated altitude values reflect the aircraft's altitude above Mean Sea Level, a constant value used in aviation and other applications. Indicated Airspeed is the air speed taken directly from the airspeed indicator without any corrections for temperature or pressure. 2013. 7. 5. · That sort of thing is really common in Oz due to the requirement for IFR aircraft in CTA to be equipped with an assigned altitude indicator or altitude alerter. I made one for a Navajo I manage here in the US. I felt like I was missing something after the Oz fleet & then flying turbine equipment with altitude selectors. 2022. 6. 23. · Monitor the autopilot and speed as the aircraft levels off at 10,000 feet. Turn off the TAXI and LANDING LIGHTS. The SEATBELTS indicator may be turned off above 10,000 feet. If set to AUTO, it will automatically turn off. Down we ease towards the dark yet iridescent shimmer of water. The shores of the lake stand out in the moonlight like a relief map. At 400 feet I ease the throttles forward. I have one eye on the airspeed indicator tape and I try to pin the speed at 480 knots. The other eye is on the radar altitude reading and the preset lights. Safe flying requires that the pilot knows the speed and altitude that they are flying at. Air speed is measured using small tubes called Pitot tubes (pee-to). These cylindrical tubes are positioned on the aircraft and air naturally flows into them during flight. The tube is expanded or compressed by the differing pressures caused by the speed. 2020. 2. 14. · Absolute Altitude. Height above ground level (AGL). Pressure Altitude. The altitude indicated on the altimeter based on a ‘standard atmospheric level’, this is sometimes used in flight planning calculations.. Surrounding the globe are a series of communication satellites locked in orbit. Satellites in the sky sends signals with a timecode. The GPS receiver in the aircraft receives that timecode and compares it to the actual time. Down we ease towards the dark yet iridescent shimmer of water. The other eye is on the radar altitude reading and the preset lights. Pilots become confused about the orientation of the aircraft when altitude indicator does not work or gives wrong information, especially at night or when the visibility is poor. In my opinion a very simple device such as a spirit level (also called bubble level or bubble balance) can be used in cockpits in addition to altitude indicator to overcome these problems.
